ARTIST STATEMENT – VOLVA SERIES
These vessels reference the form of the Volva shell which is part of the group of sea shells from the Ovulidae family.
The works explore the sensuality of porcelain and the organic process of forming on the wheel.
I am concerned with the harmonious combination of the formal elements of line, form, proportion, rhythm, colour and surface.
The pieces are wheel thrown using porcelain and are fired to 1300 degrees centigrade in a gas kiln. Metallic lustres are then applied and the pieces fired again to 770 degrees centigrade.
ARTIST STATEMENT – OVULA SERIES
These pieces are derived from a study of the forms and surfaces of Cowrie shells and in more general terms relate to my experience of the ocean and beaches of Queensland.
Other influences include Chinese and Japanese Ceramics and Minimalist Art.
