Oxide Clay Art is a pottery and ceramics studio specialising in Wheel Throwing Pottery classes for small groups.

Classes are run by award winning artist potter and teacher, Joe Ottaway.  Joe provides exceptional quality teaching with over 30 years’ experience as a TAFE Ceramics Teacher and Ceramic Artist in Brisbane.

Joe is a master potter and his experience and enthusiastic approach to teaching ensures that students have an enjoyable, rewarding, high quality pottery experience exploring their creativity and learning new skills.

The experience at Oxide Clay Art is also unique because students are able to finish their pots with professional quality high fired stoneware reduction glazes which have been developed and refined by Joe over the past 30 years.

What’s Included In Our Pottery Classes On The Sunshine Coast:

We cater for beginners to advanced and offer 5 week wheel throwing courses held on Wednesday mornings, 9.30 am -12.30 pm. Normally two 5 week courses are conducted during each School Term.

One off Introductory Wheel Throwing workshops are also held periodically on Sunday Afternoons. These workshops are ideal for beginners who would like to try the wheel but don’t want to commit to a 5 week course.

The 5 week courses are suitable for beginners or people with previous experience on the wheel. Classes are for adults only.

Individual wheel throwing tuition is also available. ($80 per hour)

Our Studio is air-conditioned for year round comfort.

The Studio does not have wheelchair access.

5 Week Wheel Throwing Course Outline

This course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of wheel throwing. You will learn how to make a variety of forms on the wheel as well as methods of decorating and glazing work. There is a strong focus on teaching skills and techniques through a structured, supportive learning environment. Classes are suitable for beginners to advanced students.  Experienced students are tutored according their individual skill level and are encouraged to develop personal direction with their work by undertaking more focused and challenging projects. Classes run for 3 hours and numbers are limited to 9 students.

Small class numbers ensure plenty of individual tuition which enables fast development of skills on the wheel. Most beginning students are able to make work on the wheel during the first class session and are able to produce several glazed and finished pieces by the end of the course. During the 5 week course beginning students will learn how to:

  •  Prepare, knead and recycle your clay

  •  Centre & throw off the wheel-head

  •  Create forms such as bowls & cups and cylinders

  •  Trim & finish your pots, alter shapes and add handles

  • Decorate the surface of your pots using slip,underglaze colours, carving, sgraffito, inlay or impressed textures

  • Glaze your pots using Oxide Clay Art’s own professional stoneware reduction fired glazes made at the studio

Full course payment is required to secure a booking.

Course fee: $275 – 5 weeks, (15 hours tuition)

Fee also includes supply of  5 kilos clay, underglazes, glazes and use of tools and equipment.

Firing cost is extra, ($7.00 per kilo x 2 firings). Average  firing fee for a beginning student is approximately $25 per course. For example the total cost of firing a 250 gram coffee cup including glaze is approximately $3.50.  Firing service is not provided for work made outside of classes.

Each student has a wheel for their exclusive use during  throwing classes.

Introductory Wheel Throwing Workshop – 3 hours – $95.00

This workshop is ideal for beginners who would like to try the wheel but don’t want to commit to a 5 week course. The fee of $95.00 includes tuition, clay, use of tools and professional trimming, glazing and firing of 2 pots for each person.  Each participant will have their own wheel to use. Finished pieces will be ready for collection about 4 weeks after the workshop.

The Oxide Clay Art studio is located in a beautiful bushland setting at Ninderry, 5 minutes from Yandina on the Sunshine Coast. Our studio is air-conditioned for comfort all year round.

 

Class FAQ’s

You only need to bring a towel to keep clean. All tools and equipment are supplied.
Yes all classes are suitable for beginners. Although some students in a class may have experience I always teach basic skills and then tutor each student according to their individual level of skill.
The class fee includes tuition, 5 kilos of clay, underglazes, glazes and use of tools and equipment. Extra clay may be purchases if needed. Firing cost is extra, ($6.00 per kilo x 2 firings). The average firing fee for a beginning student is approximately $25 – $30 per course. Firing service is not provided for student work made outside of classes or people not currently enrolled in a class.
Most beginning students are able to make small basic pieces on the wheel during the first class session and are able to complete several glazed and finished pieces by the end of the 5 week course. See examples of student work on the Gallery Page of the website. Students are shown how to make forms such at cylinders, bowls, cups and small plates. A variety of surface and glazing techniques are also covered in classes.
Yes when booking a course full payment is required in order to confirm and hold your place in a course. Payment is made online via the website using PayPal or a credit card. A $20 fee is charged for cancellations. Refunds are not available for cancellations within 14 days of commencement of courses. You may transfer your enrolment to another person to be used in the same course prior to the start date. If a class session or course is cancelled by Oxide Clay Art a full refund is provided.
Unfortunately if you miss any classes I am not able to offer substitute classes as all classes are usually full and each student has a wheel for their exclusive use.
Wheel throwing is a physical activity which requires normal strength. People who have weakness or pain in wrists, shoulders, back or neck are advised to consult with their doctor before commencing wheel throwing classes.
